Resident in Switzerland

Three levels, depending on what you want to do

The difference between the levels is not the amount of content, it is what you do with it. The first explains the rules, the second helps you fill in your tax return, the third goes further.

Level 1

Understand

You read

  • 33-page guide
  • Six-question self-assessment
  • 50-term glossary

Free
Published in January 2027

Level 2

Declare

You enter your figures

  • Inventory and valuation spreadsheet
  • Decision tree for each transaction
  • Information sheets for all 26 cantons
  • Five-criteria test, with a verdict
  • Template explanatory note
  • Checklist before you file

In preparation

Level 3

Master

You go deeper

  • Decentralised finance, mining
  • Regularising undeclared past years
  • Complex cases, one by one
  • Updated whenever a rule changes

In preparation

The first guide will be published in January 2027, once the Federal Tax Administration has published the official prices as at 31 December 2026: these are used to value your cryptocurrencies, and no tax return can be completed before then. Until then, all you need to do is export your platform statements and note your balances as at 31 December. If the Federal Tax Administration then publishes the new version of its working paper, a new edition will follow; levels 2 and 3 are in preparation. Sign up to be notified of each publication. Every guide is dated: rules and contacts change, and a copy downloaded in September may no longer be up to date in December. We publish a new edition when they change; check the date of yours on its first and last pages.

Where to declare in your canton? The code, the section and the supporting documents required vary from canton to canton. See the page for your canton: twenty-three cantons are already covered.
