What to do, and when. The most important point is not the filing deadline: it is what you do on 31 December.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 31 December | Export the position statements from all your platforms and capture the balances of your personal wallets. These values are not easy to find afterwards. |
| January | Note the official tax prices as soon as they are published (the Federal Tax Administration publishes them during January), draw up your valuation table, add up the year's income from staking, lending and airdrops. |
| February – March | Fill in the section provided by your canton, enclose the supporting documents and, if your situation includes anything unusual, a short explanatory note. |
| Cantonal deadline | File, or request an extension before the deadline. A retroactive request is never accepted. |
| Canton | Ordinary deadline | Extension |
|---|---|---|
| Vaud | 15 March | Automatic extension to 30 June, then to 30 September on request via e-Délai, to be submitted between 16 May and 30 June. Free of charge. |
| Geneva | 31 March | Possible via e-Démarches. A fee is charged from the first request. |
| Fribourg | 31 March | Possible via the cantonal portal. Free of charge if requested before the deadline. |
| Valais | 31 March | Free until 30 June on online request to the cantonal tax administration, then for a fee until 30 September. An exceptional extension may be granted in justified situations. |
| Neuchâtel | Shown on your form | Written, reasoned request to the Service des contributions, or via the Guichet unique online portal. Free until 30 April, then a fee of up to 40 francs. No extension beyond 31 October. |
| Jura | Shown on your form | Extension request to be sent to the Service des contributions before the deadline, using the cantonal form. |
In several cantons, including Neuchâtel and the Jura, the date that applies is the one printed on your own tax return form: it may differ from one taxpayer to another. The dates above also change from year to year. Always check your form and your cantonal administration's portal before acting: they are authoritative, not this page.
You receive a reminder, usually with a fee. If you do not respond, the administration makes an ex officio assessment: it estimates your income and wealth itself. This estimate is almost always unfavourable, and hard to challenge without the very documents you are missing. An objection is still possible within thirty days of the decision.
