Frequently asked questions

Do cryptocurrencies go in the list of securities in Vaud?

No. The canton of Vaud puts them under code 420 of the tax return, with cash, gold and other precious metals. Most other cantons, by contrast, place them in the list of securities.

How do you declare several cryptocurrencies in VaudTax?

The code 420 section accepts only a total amount. Enter the total value in francs as at 31 December, and enclose a detailed list: each token, its quantity, the price used and its value.

Do small amounts of cryptocurrency have to be declared in Vaud?

Yes. The canton sets no threshold. Checks take the size of the amounts into account, but the declaration is due whatever the amount.

Which supporting documents does the Vaud administration ask for?

It asks for them when needed, not systematically: statements printed from the platform or wallet and, depending on the case, simple screenshots.

The rest does not depend on the canton. What is taxable, the value to use as at 31 December, the treatment of staking or airdrops: these rules are federal and apply everywhere in Switzerland. They are explained in the frequently asked questions and in the free guide.

Level 2, in preparation, will go further for the canton of Vaud: which price to use for a token missing from the Federal Tax Administration's list, where to declare income from staking, lending or airdrops, how to present your cryptocurrencies in VaudTax, and which documents to prepare from 31 December.
