Your platform's tax statement: what it is for, and what to do with it

Some platforms issue an annual tax statement for your cryptocurrencies. It makes the tax return easier, and several cantons ask for it first. But not every platform provides one, and it does not spare you from checking the figures.

What is a tax statement?

It is an annual document, issued by the platform, that summarises what you held there on 31 December and, often, the income received during the year. It resembles the tax statement a bank sends for a securities account. Its content and layout vary from one platform to another, and a self-custody wallet never produces one.

What it must show to be useful

  1. The date of 31 December and your name as the holder.
  2. Each token separately, with its quantity, the price used and its value in francs.
  3. The year's income, if any: staking, lending, airdrops.

Compare the price shown with the Federal Tax Administration's price list (ICTax). For a token on that list, the Federal Tax Administration's price applies, not the platform's. Which value to declare at 31 December.

What the cantons ask for

CantonTax statement and supporting documents
Appenzell AusserrhodenScreenshot of the wallet at 31 December or the platform's tax report, required systematically.

VaudOn request: statements printed from the platform or the wallet; depending on the case, screenshots are accepted.

For the other cantons, the documents expected are listed on your canton's page.

Without a tax statement

If your platform does not provide one, or for a self-custody wallet, your supporting documents are dated screenshots of your balances at 31 December, an export of your transactions and a list of your tokens with their value in francs. The details are in Which value to declare at 31 December.

Some cantons also ask for the addresses of your self-custody wallets, for example Graubünden, St Gallen and Thurgau.

Keep it

Download the statement as soon as it is available and keep it with your screenshots and exports: a platform can change its features, freeze withdrawals or close. Platform hacked or bankrupt: what to declare?
